Message Z1 Motorsports is now introducing the Version 2 of our popular Z1 Motorsports 58mm CNC Throttle Bodies. Available in your choice of Chrome, Black Anodized or Polished (Matte Finish coming soon).

As Z1 continues to evolve and improve, so do our products themselves, methods of testing, and (QC) inspection procedures.

An example of Z1 Motorsports’ ongoing commitment to offer quality Z32 products is the recent implementation of expanded quality control testing procedures for the Z1 Motorsport 58mm CNC Throttle Bodies.

In the past we spot checked a portion of our production runs (random sampling). If we found no significant issues with the random samples we were satisfied. All units would then receive a brief inspection before shipment. Most of the Z1 58mm throttle bodies we’ve sold had no problems and continue to perform as they should. However some issues have been brought to our attention. Feedback from our customers, both direct and indirect has been gathered and cataloged providing us with a clear list of objectives for us to address.

All issues with previous models of the Z1 58mm Throttle Bodies have been examined and have now been corrected in the Version 2.0 CNC model. Some of the issues that have been brought before our attention include:
- Leaky shaft seals
- Lateral shaft movement – Resulting in air leakage around the shaft as well as throttle plate binding.
- Improper sealing of the throttle plate in the throttle body main bore.
- Improper machining of the shaft end that fits into the Throttle Position Sensor – Resulting in a TPS sensor that is at the maximum adjustment range or requires modifications.
- Sticking throttle plates – A result of the lateral shaft movement

In order to prevent any future issues with the Z1 Throttle Bodies, we have trained our QC staff to perform the following checks on ALL Z1 58mm CNC Throttle Body sets prior to shipping them out to our customers. The QC checks now performed include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Verification of no lateral shaft play present – This is done by physically attempting to pull or push the main throttle body shaft side to side. No movement should be present. The shaft is a press fit.
2. Pressure testing of each throttle body set - There must be NO leaks around shaft Seals while pressurizing the chamber at 25 psi (min).
3. TPS Adjustment within the acceptable range – The angle of the TPS Sensor’s keyway must be within a margin of +/- 2 degrees allowable.
4. Verification of all necessary fasteners and associated hardware
5. Correct Throttle Plate orientation
6. Throttle Plate operates smoothly – The throttle plate must rotate freely with some minimal drag. A result of the shaft seals.
7. Throttle Plate seals against bore evenly - When fully closed, a minimal amount of air gap should be present around the throttle plates. This is easily tested by either by holding the throttle body up towards a light source. The amount of light showing between the plate and the throttle body main bore should be limited.
8. Inspect shaft and rods for damage and defects – Visually inspect all shafts, rods and vacuum ports for damage or deformation.
9. Visual Inspection: Finish/overall appearance inspected – Inspect the overall surface finish and quality.
10. Verify correct vacuum fitting orientation - The pressed in vacuum fittings located on the bottom of the throttle bodies must be oriented in the correct direction.
11. Ensure (1) Left & (1) Right side throttle body is packaged together with necessary hardware.

All throttle bodies initially undergo a visual inspection, evaluating such things as shaft play, physical appearance, presence of hardware and fasteners, etc (see above list for more). Following the visual test, all throttle bodies are subjected to an individual, simulated, “boost leak test”. In order to pressure test each throttle body set safely and accurately, we have fabricated an in house test bench specifically for our throttle bodies. Designed for repeated use while minimizing any damage to the throttle bodies’ finish, this test bench has proven to be invaluable. Shown below, each individual throttle body is bolted to the O-ringed test bench and is pressure tested to ~ 25 psi.

Any defects found during the QC testing are either repaired if possible or results in the discarding of the unit as defective. Each set of the Z1 Motorsports 2.0 CNC 58mm Throttle Bodies will now be accompanied by an inspection sheet that is filled out by our staff during the inspection process. These sheets act as a guide, verifying that all critical testing points are inspected and approved before the set ever hits our shelves.
